Description
According to Roman legend, Romulus, one of the founders of Rome, wished for women to become residents of the male-dominated city, for there was no other way to further its population. To accomplish this, they invited the neighboring Sabian tribe to Rome on the pretense of a festival, after which they proceeded to slaughter the men of their community and abduct, or rape, their wives. The figurine made with Capodimonte porcelain; recapitulates the scene in stone, imitating the primary sculpture made by the sixteenth century Italo-Flemish sculptor Giambologna— for the Medici family in Florence, Italy. Every curve and muscle movement is etched marvelously into the stone, filling life into the legend for us to witness formally. The diligence assigned to sculpting and reiterating a story in stone is evident.
